Born in Olongapo, Philippines, and raised in San Diego and Houston, Kayla Abuda Galang is an Austin-based filmmaker drawing from the minutiae of my communities, surroundings, and memory. Recently, she was named one of Filmmaker Magazine’s 25 New Faces of Independent Film, and her latest film, When You Left Me On That Boulevard, received the Short Film Grand Jury Prize at the 2023 Sundance Film Festival and the Special Jury Award for Vision at the 2023 SXSW Film & TV Festival. She is currently developing her first two feature films: ’06-’07, a suburban high-stakes love story set in 2000s Paradise Hills, and On Earth as it is in Heaven, a comedy about familial grief in modern-day Houston.
