The Mastermind
Festival Note
In 1970s Massachusetts, unemployed carpenter JB Mooney (Josh O’Connor) seeks excitement by planning an art heist at a local museum, thinking that the barely guarded location would make for an easy target. Things predictably go south, with this supposedly simple heist turning violent. Mooney’s life quickly falls apart, and he is forced to leave everything behind in the midst of an America in turmoil. Reichardt subverts genre expectations and uses a driving, jazzy score to underline the comparatively tame actions of this man who believes he deserves more than what he’s got.
