Festival Note
In Ran, Kurosawa transports Shakespeare’s King Lear to 16th century Japan. Lord Hidetora Ichimonji (Tatsuya Nakadai) is set to retire, and split his holdings between his three heirs. The prideful warlord exiles one of his sons for daring to criticize him, and leaves the other two with control of his lands. But the ease of his retirement is short, as his two sons conspire to strip their father of all his power and take full control of the clan. Kurosawa injects an Eastern fatalism to Shakespeare’s original work, telling a story of a man who cannot escape his sins to the very end.
Sa Ran, dinala ni Kurosawa ang King Lear ni Shakespeare sa Japan ng ika-16 na yugto. Magpapahinga na si Lord Hidetora Ichimonji (Tatsuya Nakadai), at hahatiin niya ang kanyang ari-arian sa kanyang tatlong anak. Ipinalis ni Hidetora ang isa sa kanyang mga anak dahil sa kanyang pamumuna, at iniwan ang kanyang mga lupain na natirang dalawa. Pero hindi nagtagal bago malaman na magkasabwat ang dalawa, at nais nilang tanggalin ang kanilang ama para ma-kontrol ang lahat ng kanyang hawak. Dinagdagan ni Kurosawa ng Eastern fatalism ang gawa ni Shakespeare, at ginawa siyang kwento ng tao hindi makatakas mula sa kanyang mga kasalanan, hanggang sa huli.
