What do we talk about when we say “regional” cinema? How do we contextualize work from the regions without succumbing to stereotypes or tokenizing experiences? 2023 ArtsEquator Fellow Jay Rosas will talk about his years of attempting to answer these questions and more. From his writings in New Durian Cinema and Pelikula Journal to programming at Ngilngig and Cinema Rehiyon to creating alternative film spaces through Pasalidahay, Rosas will discuss the different ways one can engage with cinema from the regions, the persistent questions and problems of such problematics, and the possible ways forward.
JAY ROSAS is a film programmer, critic, organizer, and filmmaker based in Davao City. He co-founded Pasalidahay, a film collective that organizes film screenings and workshops, including the Ngilngig Asian Fantastic Film Festival in which he is the chief programmer. He has also programmed films for the Mindanao Film Festival and Cinema Rehiyon. His writing has appeared in Pelikula Journal, Mindanao Times, Sine Kultura, and New Durian Cinema. He participated in the Film Criticism Workshop of the Yamagata International Documentary Film Festival in 2015, and the Working Title program for Asian film curators in 2017-18 in Japan and Thailand. In 2019, he produced and co-directed the short documentary Budots: The Craze, which was part of the first Daang Dokyu Festival in 2020, and other local and international festivals and screenings. He is currently an executive committee member of the National Cinema Committee of the National Committee for Culture and the Arts (NCCA). Recently, he was selected as one of the Southeast Asian fellows for the Arts Equator Fellowship. He has worked in the development sector for more than 15 years in the field of communications, advocacy, and knowledge management. He is developing his next documentary about Davao.

Does one need to have a film background to become a film critic? How does one develop their own niche and a voice as a critic? Are there ethical codes that must be respected when one becomes a critic and a filmmaker? How does one pan work when they belong to such a small film community? In this 3-hour in-person session open to the public, Dodo Dayao will talk about his beginnings in film criticism, transitioning into filmmaking, navigating the lines between film critic and filmmaker, and developing his niche interests as a critic and a filmmaker. Dayao will be opening the floor to conversations about how he watches films, what gaps he sees in criticism and conversations about cinema, and more.
DODO DAYAO wrote about films before he wrote films. He was one of the writers and editors of the book This Is Not A Film Movement and the proprietor of the now-inactive film blog Piling Piling Pelikula. His film writing has appeared on ANC, CNN, Esquire, High Life, Philippine Free Press, Vault, Cinematheque Quarterly, Pelikula Journal, and Kinopunch, among others, and he has written pieces for Cinemanila, Cinema One Originals and the Edinburgh Film Festival. He transitioned to screenwriting in 2010 and then into filmmaking in 2014, after he wrote and directed Violator (2014) followed by the short film If You Leave (2016). The last film he wrote and directed, Midnight In A Perfect World, came out in 2021. He is currently working on his next film, his first book of nonfiction, and his first book of fiction. He lives in Quezon City.

Liz Shackleton, Contributing Editor (Asia) for Deadline and founder of Streamlined, will talk about her decades-spanning experience covering industries within Asia, the need to engage in transnational conversations, the work that goes into creating nuanced discussions around film subcultures and trade reporting, the problems within the film “industry” that are more widespread than we imagine, and the solutions hidden in plain sight.
