Little Amélie or The Character of Rain
Festival Note
Based on the memoir of Belgian writer Amélie Nothomb. Amélie ( Loïse Charpentier) is born to a Belgian family living in Japan in the years following the war. The movie is told entirely from her perspective, from the time she was in her mother’s womb, to her awakening as a precocious toddler. She becomes attached to Nishio (Victoria Grobois), her family’s Japanese housekeeper, through whom she comes to learn some bracing truths about the world, and the kind of life she is privileged to have. This animated film is colorful and boisterous, evoking the wonder a child may have at discovering the world.
