Bel Ami
Festival Note
A collection of stories among the queer population of a cold, remote town in Northeast China. A closeted man trapped in a loveless marriage comes out to his barber. A lesbian couple selects a gay hairdresser to be their sperm donor, and decide to surveil him to ensure that he is the right person for the job. A restaurant owner wants to unite all of the town’s gays. Jun Geng pitches these stories of desire within an absurdist framework, highlighting the strangeness that occurs when society seeks to suppress.
