Diamonds in the Sand
Festival Note
Salaryman Yoji (Lily Franky), following the death of his mother, realizes that he has nothing to look forward to in his solitary life in Japan. He impulsively travels to the Philippines, following his mother’s Filipina caregiver Minerva (Maria Isabel Lopez). He becomes involved in the life of Minerva and her daughter (Charlie Dizon), and slowly discovers a different way of being. Janus Victoria’s debut wrestles with the Japanese concept of kodokushi, or the lonely death, by providing the contrast of the Filipino sense of community.
