Festival Note
WInner of the Palme d’Or. Brooklyn sex worker Anora (Mikey Madison) is paid $15,000 by the son of a Russian billionaire Ivan (Mark Eydelshteyn) to spend an entire week with him, catering to his whims. They fly out to Las Vegas, and impulsively get married on a Ketamine-fueled bender. Word gets back to Russia, and Ivan’s father dispatches some men to try and get the marriage annulled. But though the circumstances are not ideal, the New York-tough Anora is more than willing to fight for this marriage, which could grant her the resources to live the kind of life she really wants to lead. Baker yet again delves into the seedy world of sex work to study its hardened, thorougly human denizens, and to tell a story of class struggle between worlds that are impossibly distant from each other.
Nanalo ng Palme d’Or.
