Osamu struggles to make ends meet for his family’s survival by committing petty crimes. While shoplifting at a grocery store, Osamu and his son find a little girl in the freezing cold and take her home. Although reluctant to take care of the girl at first, Osamu’s wife agrees after discovering evidence of abuse against the child. Barely making enough money to survive, Osamu’s family seems to live happily until an unforeseen incident tests the bond that unite them.
Kore-eda Hirokazu started as an assistant director in television documentaries after graduating from Waseda University in 1987. He later on went into directing feature films and documentaries. He has won over 40 awards for direction and screenwriting at major festivals worldwide and in Japan. His first feature film Maborosi (1995) won the Golden Osella Award for Best Director at Venice Film Festival in 1995. Like Father, Like Son (2013) won the Jury Prize at Cannes Film Festival in 2013.
